Folk songs/ folk singing
Basic idea:
- Participants of each country send 3-5 folk songs with lyrics
- As a leader of the workshop I choose max. 2 folk songs, if necessary I arrange them by myself.
- Songs' theme should be positive and entertaining.
- The melody should have typical repetitive music intervals and rhythms, specific for each country (e.g. Slovenian typical folk interval is a tierce (terce), most common rhythm is ¾, 4/4).
- Participants should bring a small typical folk instrument (they should let me know which one by the end of June). Then they make a detailed presentation of their instrument on a poster or in a PowerPoint presentation.
- We talk about the songs’ lyrics in order to link it in some way with the folk fairytale workshop.
- The end of the workshop will be oriented towards finding common ground with other workshops.
Expectations:
- To learn 12 folk songs.
- To become familiar with each country's typical music intervals and rhythms.
- To get to know basics about each country's folk instruments and to present one in detail.
- “Exhibit” the presentation posters.
- To sing 6 folk songs in the final production (1 from each country).
Tasks for participants:
Participants of each country send 3-5 folk songs with lyrics before end of June (music notation or a recording of the song, which cannot be turbo folk arrangement, lyrics should be at least roughly translated to English)
Minimum number of participants: 5

About the leader:
Špela is 24 years old. She decided to be in this exchange, because she was on similar exchanges twice; in Germany and in Slovenia. Being a workshop leader was something new for her. She studied music in the pedagogical faculty of the University of Maribor. She is the conductor of two choirs: MePZ Bistrica ob Sotli and MoPZ Podčetrtek. She likes this job very much. She also loves to sing in a choir and that is why she sings in Vokal group Orans (from Bistrica ob Sotli) and in a really good choir in Maribor – Akademski pevski zbor Maribor (The Maribor Academic choir). She also sang in SNG Maribor (Slovenian national theater of Maribor in Opera). Besides singing, she also enjoys riding a bike and spending some quality time by the sea.
